Lose your Summer Internship? Here's What to Do Instead:
What To Do When You Lost Your Summer Internship:
As a business student, I have taken all the career classes and honestly I have become passionate about taking charge of my future. Sounds chessy but it’s true. Now that the world is upside down, I wanted to share some tips. I had secured my summer internship and I was so excited. I was going to be working in Downtown Denver and I was so excited to learn constantly in a new industry. But, when the world shut down, I had to pivot and change my summer plans.
Be an Assistant
Help out your parents, a friend or extended family and see how you can help them in their professional life.
You can create some good resume bullet points even if you are helping someone organize or making powerpoint presentations
Network
Reach out to Linkedin Connections, extended family and friends and set up a phone call with them.
Have specific questions for them about their industry and role. Employers like when you take initiative and show interest in their company
Pour Into Your Passion and Turn that into a Business
Start a blog or a Youtube channel and pour your time and energy into something you’ve always wanted to do.
Or if you love calligraphy or photography consider opening an etsy or instagram shop and sell your artwork
Think Like an Entrepreneur
When it comes to starting a business, one of the most important steps I have learned as an Entrepreneurship major is you have to talk to the customer and figure out what their “pain point” is.
So, if you are interested in the travel or fashion industry, reach out to the targeted consumers and talk to them about what they like, what they don’t like and something that is missing in the industry. Collect your research and maybe even present it to someone in the industry
Take An Online Course
Are you interested in Digital marketing or Data Analytics? Look into online courses. They are normally 6-8 weeks long and they are offered through a lot of different universities.
That way when you finish the course, you can have a certificate of Digital Marketing to add to your resume.
Prepare for Future Interviews
Think back to the classes you’ve taken and write a list of the real world experience and skills that you have completed during your course work.
Take notes and have your answers ready for frequently asked questions, like team projects or your greatest strength.
I always use the same notebook when I am on phone calls with employers and I find it very helpful to have my notes organized so I can feel confident and prepared for the call.
