Nicaragua 2018
Summer 2018, I planned on going to Nicaragua for the third time, to serve as an alumni leader. As the summer approached, things changed…

Friends and Family,
Sending an update letter has been something I’ve loved doing after my Nicaragua trip each year. This year, the Lord has a different type of follow up letter in mind for me to write.
First, thank you for taking the time to read these letters and all your support from the past two years to the present. I love being able to share my Nicaragua experiences with the people I love.
Currently, Sydney and I should be serving in Nicaragua. However, due to political unrest and violence in Managua, for safety purposes, our trip was canceled. In early May, our ministry partners and leaders warned the team that the trip might be postponed. Recently, we received the news that the trip was canceled. Our mission partners wrote in a letter with the update:
“As of the 28th of May, at least 81 people had been killed, 868 injured and 438 arrested amidst the state’s heavy-handed and highly coordinated response to the protest. The Nicaraguan authorities have turned on their own people in a vicious, sustained and frequently lethal assault on their rights to life, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”
My heart is broken. As you all know, I have fallen deeply in love with Managua and the ministry there. Last year, I stood in Masaya Marketplace where today death and violence and riots engulf the area. I have formed connections with the people in Managua that will last a lifetime. Even in the midst of my crazy spring semester at Baylor, I connected with Pamela, one of the rescue home girls, via Facebook and I caught up with her (in Spanish of course). This trip and mission in Managua have impacted me in ways I never imagined. Last year I renewed my Faith and got re-baptized during the trip. Many of you know that I tell too many Nicaragua stories but I just want everyone to love Nicaragua as much as I do. This year, the Lord is asking the team and I to love Nicaragua in a different way.
While this year I may not be able to be in country serving, I know that I can still serve with prayer and financial support in the midst of the political unrest.
I would do anything to see the sweet faces of my little boys, Mario, Pedro and Ariel, or to hug sweet Wendy and just to see all the kids that touched my heart. I know that at this time, the Lord is calling me to surrender in prayer and learn to serve in a different way. If you feel called, please pray for Nicaragua, our mission partners (Open Heart Ministries and the Buzbees) and for a movement and revival in the country.
xoxo,
Megan
