“Expectation is the Root of all Heartbreak”
“Expectation is the Root of all Heartbreak” - Shakespeare
I heard that quote senior year of high school in my AP Literature class and from that moment on, as soon as I get excited about a new boy or a new opportunity, this quote echoes in the back of my mind as I try not to get too excited. Every time I get excited and play out all the scenarios in my head, and the next day, without fail, I am heartbroken. Heartbroken may be an exaggeration but, disappointed nonetheless.
Could be a romantic relationship, friendship, job, traveling opportunity, etc. whatever it is, it won’t live up to the perfect expectation we make up in our heads. Because why would the world we create in our heads not be perfect? Of course we are going to fabricate and make up the best scenarios. In our heads, we are the director of our own movie. But that’s the problem, life doesn’t exist in our heads, it happens right in front of us.
That is why the best moments and our favorite stories to tell are the nights we didn’t plan for. The nights when we chase the sunset, or mattress surf are not planned, they happen by just living in the moment. Those are the nights we will have stories about to tell our kids. That does not mean that the planned dinners, movies and ice cream runs aren’t fun, but the unexpected moments are the stories that will last a lifetime.
